Dr Mpho Phalatse
Dr. Mpho Phalatse has been Mayor of the City of Johannesburg since November 2021, becoming the first female mayor of Johannesburg in the city's history.
A medical doctor with significant experience in the health sector, she was drawn to politics while working in Johannesburg.
She holds a doctorate in medicine from the Sefako Makgatho Health Services University.
With significant experience in public and community service, she was appointed as a member of the Municipal Committee (MMC) for Health and Social Services Development between August 2016 and October 2019.
While on the MMC, Ms. Phalatse championed extended service hours at city clinics, as well as the city's multi-faceted substance abuse prevention and treatment strategy, among many other initiatives.
On January 17, 2022, she was elected to the C40 Steering Committee.
