May 16 - International Day on Living Together
Last December, the 72nd session of the General Assembly of the United Nations, by consensus of its 193 members, declared May 16 "International Day of Living Together in Peace".
This project is the result of an initiative carried by Cheikh Khaled Bentounes, which was supported by the President of the International Observatory of Mayors on Living Together, Mr. Raymond Chrétien.
From the Observatory, we are very pleased with this important acknowledgement by the international community in favour of peace, openness, inclusiveness and diversity.
On this first edition of the international day, the Observatory would like to highlight the special contribution of cities to make communities safer and more inclusive (see video statement by Mr. Raymond Chrétien, President of the Observatory).
An official ceremony was held at the United Nations headquarters (see UNwebTV broadcasting). Many local events were organized throughout the world, including in Montreal, where the City Hall was lit in blue, colour of the United Nations. Un event organized by the City of Montreal, in collaboration with key local stakeholders, took place at the City Hall as well.
