COVID-19: measures taken by Glasgow
Glasgow – Online Surgeries For Community Groups
Glasgow like other peer cities is acutely aware of the impact that COVID-19 has had on our city’s fantastic community groups that many in our local communities rely upon.
To help these groups during the public health emergency, the Glasgow Council on Voluntary Services (GCVS) is offering a range of free training workshops and surgeries designed to support staff, volunteers and organisations.
The workshops have been developed, planned and will be delivered in partnership with the city-wide Glasgow Capacity Building Group including Glasgow City Council, Volunteer Glasgow, CEIS, Jobs and Business Glasgow and Glasgow Life.
Surgeries will cover topics such as funding, staff furlough, homeworking and lone working, redundancy and restructure.
This initiative is in addition to the “Glasgow Helps” Community Hub. Glasgow Helps is a new online directory of COVID-19 services supporting people across Glasgow. In partnership with Glasgow City Council, Glasgow Health and Social Care Partnership, and Volunteer Glasgow.
Glasgow Virtual outdoor education at Blairvadach
The team at the Glasgow City Council’s Blairvadach Outdoor Education Centre in Rhu have produced an online workbook which could help parents and children to learn about outdoor education during lockdown.
The centre normally hosts a five day outdoor education residential for pupils from across the city, providing outdoor learning opportunities for young people using activities including hillwalking, canoeing, rock climbing and more.
Katie Mackay an Outdoor Education Instructor from Blairvadach said: “Because of Covid-19 and lockdown many schools are missing out on their planned trip which is a big disappointment for the pupils.
“It’s very difficult to do outdoor education when you can’t go outside. But we’ve worked with Ardroy Outdoor Education Centre in Lochgoilhead to produce a workbook that can be done at home.
“The workbook offers outdoor-inside activities and could provide fun learning for children - with the help of parents or carers.
You can access the Glasgow Education Services workbook on the Blairvadach website.
Glasgow works with health services, partners and community groups re Gambling Harms during COVID-19
In order to better understand what local front line services in Glasgow that may be supporting people vulnerable to gambling harms would find helpful during COVID19, Glasgow City Council working with NHS Scotland and other partners in its Glasgow's Gambling Harms Group have prepared a short questionnaire that has gone live today (closes 15 May)
Bailie Annette Christie, Chair of the Wellbeing, Empowerment, Community & Citizen Engagement (WECCE) Policy Development Committee, at Glasgow City Council has written a blog to sit alongside the questionnaire and highlight the issues.
City partners, stakeholders and community groups have been asked to disseminate the blog and questionnaire through their networks to help as gather as much information as possible, and enable the Gambling Harms Advisory Group to refocus the work of the group on meeting the needs of local people and communities in the current circumstances during lockdown during which exposure to gambling harms has become more acute.
They have been asked to think as broadly as possible about people who may be seeking support regarding gambling from a wide range of supporting services – debt and financial inclusion, children and young people, domestic violence, mental health and addictions, housing and homelessness, employability and education, safeguarding, offender support and so on.
